Robot Aviation product publication (2019)

PROJECT ARCHIVE / 2019

Technical communication for an unmanned aircraft system family

This case study documents a product publication created for Robot Aviation in 2019. It reflects the products and information presented at that time and is not a description of the company’s current work.

I created the photography and images, writing, information architecture, graphic design and print presentation.

01 / The assignment

The publication had to explain several connected components: unmanned aircraft, ground control, sensors, communications and mission workflows. The task was to present them as parts of one system, with enough technical detail to distinguish each product.

02 / The system

The ground-control section introduced SkyView as the operating layer for mission planning, vehicle and sensor control, mapping, search-area generation and restricted-airspace monitoring. The following product material covered the FX10, FX20, FX450 and FX-Y aircraft.

The order moved from control and mission context into individual platforms. This gave readers a consistent way to compare products with different sizes, configurations and intended uses.

03 / Writing

Technical descriptions and specifications were edited into concise product sections. Each section separated an aircraft’s role from its measurable characteristics, so key details could be scanned without losing system context.

04 / Photography

Photography documented the aircraft in production and operational settings. The images below are shown at their original proportions.

05 / Structure and design

A repeated page structure organised each product around its role, imagery and specifications. Consistent hierarchy connected the separate aircraft pages, while restrained blue and orange accents carried through the publication.

06 / Result

The result was a single printed product publication covering the ground-control system and four aircraft platforms. The real skill was understanding something complicated well enough to make it simple.

LinkedIn recommendation

This is a general professional reference covering work across several projects, not a testimonial specific to this 2019 publication.

“His technical knowledge is extensive and he is eager to apply this to each project.”
